Have you ever considered what the “value” of the data collected by your LEA might be? Each school year Texas LEA’s collect enormous amounts of student, staff, and financial data. Many LEA staff tend to view the value of the data based on the cost to collect it.

But rather than viewing the value of the data solely based on the cost of collecting it, what if we consider the utility of the data?  How is it used?  Or is it being used?  Just as we consider the value of a new classroom building so we should consider the value of our data. Would we build a new facility and then conversely not use it?  Of course not, when constructing new facilities the utilization rate of those facilities is of paramount importance.  This is exactly how we should view our data. We should consider the utilization of that data. We should view the data as an asset.  So this leads to the question, what exactly makes your data valuable? Certainly if the data is not used or is not accurate then the value is diminished.
